Halter is growing fast. While we currently support New Zealand, Australia, and the US, you can still learn more about what we do worldwide.

Halter is powered by industry-leading tech

A team of over 100 engineers and designers craft every part of Halter’s system - combining hardware, software, and AI into one connected platform to enable more productive farming.

Built for Dairy

Halter’s Dairy product is purpose-built to fit the requirements our dairy farmers’ need for intensive farming. That means, an almost-instant (90 seconds) response to action in the app for regular animal shifting, a wealth of real-time animal and pasture-management information, plus heat and health detection that update in real-time, every minute.

The App

Manage the farm from anywhere.

Create breaks, shift herds, and monitor animal and pasture performance with live data from the field. Thoughtfully designed with farmer experience at the heart, the Halter app takes advanced technology and makes it feel simple - delivering insights and enabling action.

Halter Intelligence

Advanced engineering you don't see

Underneath the hood, there's a world of smart software and machine learning models that power Halter's intelligence, turning raw data into insights that farmers can action. It's what enables the collars to guide & contain cattle, monitor their behaviour, detect when they may be unwell, and estimate pasture covers from satellite & weather data.
All happening in the background, 24/7.

Smart Data Platform

Every data point, working for your farm

Each collar collects and sends over 6,000 data points every minute to Halter’s cloud-based data platform. This information is processed in real time, then surfaced in the mobile or web app as clear, actionable insights that farmers can use to make better daily decisions.

The Cowgorithm®

Artificial intelligence that understands animal behaviour

The world-first algorithm that automatically trains animals to respond to directional sound cues from the collar, unlocking virtual fencing and remote shifting. This is the brains of Halter and the guts behind how & why Halter’s virtual fencing works so well.

Built for Beef ®

Halter’s beef product has been purpose-built for the conditions and range of beef operations. It’s a product that adapts to both the animals and the terrain. Customised collar cues direct beef cattle that suits animals not used to regular human contact, and satellite-connectivity means collars stay connected across even the most vast and expansive terrain, and can be flexible when used on leased land.

Frequently asked questions

What animals can I collar with Halter?

Only cattle. No sheep, goats or horses sorry!

How are Halter collars different from other systems?

Halter collars and towers are the result of nearly 10 years of research and development.

Dual speakers deliver clear left–right sound cues and a vibration confirms which direction to walk, so cattle quickly learn predictable, controllable guidance. The solar-powered panels are on the top of the collar, where they get maximum light exposure across the day. That position helps keep collars charged more reliably through short winter days and shaded grazing.

The latest Halter collars can also connect directly to satellite, so no on-farm tower infrastructure is required.

Why did Halter introduce direct-to-satellite connectivity for collars?

For large and remote beef farms and stations, the cost and logistics of installing on-farm towers have, at times, been out of reach.‍

We introduced satellite connectivity to change that, and it's available exclusively for beef farmers. Now, satellite-enabled Halter collars can work anywhere across your beef operation - no on-farm towers or cellular coverage required. Whether you're farming across expansive terrain, managing cattle in remote areas, or operating in a location where installing towers wasn't possible before, you can now access the full benefits of Halter's virtual fencing technology.‍

Please note: direct-to-satellite connectivity is only available for beef farmers. Dairy farmers continue to use Halter's tower-based system, which is purpose-built for the high-frequency data demands of dairy operations.

What makes Halter's satellite-enabled collars unique?

Halter is the only virtual fencing company in New Zealand offering satellite-enabled collars, in partnership with One NZ Satellite powered by Starlink.

Other virtual fencing systems still rely on infrastructure like on-farm towers or cellular 4G/5G networks, where the connection can be unreliable or unavailable across the remote and extensive areas where many beef farms and stations operate. Satellite connectivity provides more dependable remote coverage, without the on-farm infrastructure costs.

How do Halter's satellite-enabled collars work?

Satellite-enabled collars connect to the Halter app directly via satellites, downloading instructions for new grazing areas and sending information - like location data and animal health metrics - back to the app.

In New Zealand, Halter has partnered with One NZ Satellite powered by Starlink to bring reliable satellite connectivity to the collars, meaning your herd stays connected even in areas with no cell coverage.

Learn more here.

Do I need to be with a particular mobile provider for satellite-enabled collars to work?

No - Halter provides all the coverage and connectivity for the collars.

Are the app features different for satellite-enabled collars?

No - the Halter app features are the same whether your collars connect via satellite or towers.

Will the satellite-enabled collars work with tree cover?

Yes. Halter works under light tree cover in areas where you can still see the sky. If you have any questions about your specific operation, reach out to your local Territory Manager.

Can I still get Halter’s tower system on my beef farm?

Yes. If your operation is intensive and flat, the tower system may be a better option. Talk to your local Halter rep to learn more about whether a tower or satellite-connected system is best for you.

Can I get satellite-enabled collars on my dairy farm?

No, not right now. Satellite-enabled collars are for beef farms and stations only. Halter's tower-based system is purpose-built for the high volumes of data that dairy operations depend on - things like real-time heat detection, animal behaviour, and health alerts. For dairy farmers, the tower system remains the best solution.

Where will satellite-enabled collars be available?

Satellite-enabled collars are available for beef farms and stations across New Zealand, no matter how remote.
